Can AI get plate thickness from a STEP file? Only if it measures the right way

Ask an AI agent for the thickness of every plate in a STEP file and it will answer, confidently. Whether the answer is right depends on the method it uses. Four methods compared, and the one we let it trust.

A STEP file describes solids, not plates. There is no "thickness" field to read, so an AI agent has to measure it from the geometry. It will pick a method and answer with confidence. On a steel structure with hundreds of parts, the method decides how many drawings come out with the wrong plate, so it is worth telling the agent which one to use.

Method 1: the smallest side of the bounding box

Take the bounding box of the part and use its smallest dimension.

Method 2: volume divided by the box area

Volume divided by length times width of the bounding box.

Method 3: compare the two

Methods 1 and 2 disagree in a useful way. On a plate they agree. On a bought section, such as an angle or a bulb flat, the box is thick but the volume is small, so they diverge strongly.

This does not give the thickness, but it tells you what kind of part it is. A large difference means: this is probably not a plate. That is how we separate bought sections before they reach the nesting.

Method 4: read the dimensions of the drawing

Once the drawing exists, its side views show the plate edge-on, and their dimensions are the thickness. It is measured from the projected geometry, independently of the box and the volume.

This is the value we trust, with one more check: it must be a thickness you can buy. A value like 9.6 or 5.7 on a plate is not a thickness, it is a measurement problem. It stops the run and becomes a question.

What to do with bent and curved plates

For a bent plate, measure across the flat portion, not the bend. For a curved plate, measure perpendicular to the surface. In both cases the drawing's side view gives the answer more reliably than any formula.

The rule behind it

Never let an estimate reach a title block. An estimate is fine for sorting parts. The number on the drawing must be measured, and it must be possible to buy.
